Skye and back to Edinburgh 4.3.2025

 Been thinking about what makes Isle of Skye so special - besides the beautiful countryside.

The people are friendly and kind, but that’s also been true in Edinburgh. Maybe it’s that the island is sparsely populated, and there’s tremendous similarity among the houses - they look like a child’s drawing of a house, simple rectangles with symmetrical windows and peaked roofs. I’m sure there are more elaborate houses around, but this is what I saw.




If it’s not obvious - this is me feeding a highland coo!

This is some of the gorse that is blazing everywhere.



And on to Eilean Donan Castle 







You aren’t supposed to take pics inside the castle but I sneaked one to show the mixing bowls - I have these bowls!



Took a boat out on Loch Ness to see Nessie - she says hello to everyone



And back to Edinburgh which felt like coming home! Met up with Tracy and Cameron, hit a pub, went to dinner.

And so to bed.

  Headed out to Blair Castle - home of the Murrays.  Financed by selling their holding of the Isle of Man!  A bit unclear whether it was taken by eminent domain, or whether they were savvy about getting a lot of money - either way, the castle is impressive. Then on to another whisky tasting - Loren, it will be hard to choose something for you in duty free. On to afternoon tea on a steam train. Passing through beautiful country - reminds me of the Yellowstone River and the way into Yellowstone Park. On to our lovely hotel Granton-on-Spey is the town - Grant Arms is the hotel. Another dinner and so to bed.

LAX Musings and on to Scotland

It’s 5:49 pm on Saturday 3/29, and I’m sitting in the Bradley International Terminal at LAX.   My flight doesn’t leave until 9:40 pm so I have some time to fill. We drove right up to terminal - NO traffic which was unusual, but nice. Have Clear and TSA Pre so security was done in no time. Wandered through Duty Free and a few of the stores. Very high end stores which always makes me wonder - how much do they actually sell?   Trying to defeat jet lag using Timeshifter app. Have moved wake-up ahead several hours - not the easiest for me! Which means I’m sleepy now but have to stay awake until I’m on plane.   I’m supposed to wake up at 2 am LA time, drink coffee and stay awake until 1 pm in Edinburgh.Going to try and will report. Time to walk around. 7:15 pm  Got an hour of walking in, and the requisite 10,000 steps. I know I’m going to the home of whisky (note - no e) but Duty Free had a nice selection. Edinburgh Monday 3/31/2025

  Woke at 4 am to birdsong - so nice but drifted back to sleep until 6:40 when the clang and clatter of city life got me up.  Headed out for much needed coffee and found a new to me pastry - apple oat flapjack. Oats being very traditional had to try it - verdict pretty good but tomorrow think I’m going for the almond croissant instead.   Forgot to mention last night how safe Edinburgh feels - and how friendly and kind people are.   I’m in the Old City and on my walk to breakfast, saw man in a kilt!!! Was dying to take a pic but refrained. Sitting in cafe and hearing sea gulls - from the North Sea.  For perspective, Edinburgh is at 55.95 N latitude - about the same as Moscow. Some posts will be more linear as the days progress - and some will be more random. And “interesting” is a word I will use frequently! Here’s a random interesting bit.
